When looking for an elementary school parents usually want to know about the size of the school, the student to teacher ratio, the school’s ratings, and available options for before and after care. Laurel Hill has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly.

Laurel Hill is a Local Level IV program for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement for grades 3rd-6th. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending Lorton Station or remaining at Laurel Hill, their neighborhood school.

The biggest difference between the two programs is students enrolled. All students in full-time, center-based classes like Lorton Station have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools. In a Local Level IV classroom at Laurel Hill, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving students who are capable of working at an advanced level.

Over the last 15 years, enrollment in these AAP programs have more than tripled which has caused a swell in both the number of schools turned into centers and the number of schools that offer Level IV programs.

Northern Virginia is a culturally diverse population and Laurel Hill offers an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. 

In addition to classroom instruction, students welcome opportunities to participate in activities such as the band, chorus, strings, safety patrols, the Student Council Association, and the school morning news show.[/su_icon_text]

There are on average of about 900 students enrolled at Laurel Hill Elementary each school year.

Laurel Hill Elementary is located in Fairfax Station, however, most students reside in Lorton. Students living in the 22079 zip codes and the Lorton subdivisions of Gunston Corner,  Laurel Crest, Laurel Hill, Liberty, and Spring Hill will probably attend Laurel Hill Elementary. Laurel Hill is in the South County Pyramid that means if your child goes to Laurel Hill Elementary they’ll go to South County Middle School then South County High School.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Laurel Hill is open Monday through Friday are 9:20 to 4:05 for grades K – 6. 

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Laurel Hill offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

The Laurel Hill Elementary PTA supports the school through various fundraisers and events throughout the school year, like basket bingo and restaurant nights.

The PTA offers a number of before and after school fee-based programs. Whether you are looking for technology, science, fitness, or hobbies, there’s something for everyone. Check out the Laurel Hill PTA website for a list of upcoming events and meetings.
