STEAM education in FCPS is an inquiry approach to teaching and learning where students integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to solve problems. All students from kindergarten to 6th grade visit the STEAM classroom for at least 45 minutes each week.

Hayfield has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly. If your child is selected for the AAP program they’ll be pulled out with other students throughout the week for those subjects.

General music classes are taken in all grades. Gen Music includes singing, reading and listening to music. In upper grades students can elect to take strings or band.[/su_icon_text]

Hayfield Elementary is one of Alexandria’s oldest schools and has been educating local children since 1967. There are on average 750 students enrolled at Hayfield Elementary each school year, with a student-teacher ratio of 19.26 to 1. There approximately 725 students enrolled each school year.

Students living in Hayfield Farm, Hayfield View, Lake D’evereux, Wickford and even parts of Kingstowne attend Hayfield Elementary. Students who remain at Hayfield through 6th grade will move on to Hayfield Secondary, right across the street. There’s even a Middle School Transition Program in place to head get little ones ready for the next step.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Hayfield Elementary hours are Monday through Friday are 8:35 to 3:20. If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Hayfield offers SACC which is a before and after-school program with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child. They also have a few PTA Sponsored After School Programs.[/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Hayfield has an active PTA made up of parents, teachers, staff, and even grandparents. Hayfield ES PTA provides assistance to teachers in the classroom, holds fundraisers for which help fund things like student agendas and field trips. They also sponsor school and family social events to help build a sense of a community in this transient area.

In addition to the PTA, parents can volunteer to be a room parent, help out in the office, library and lunchroom. There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.[/su_icon_text]
