When looking for an elementary school parents usually want to know about the size of the school, the student to teacher ratio, the school’s ratings, and available options for before and after care. 4 Things About Dranesville Elementary

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: book” icon_color=”#800020″ icon_size=”39″]Academics

Dranesville has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contacting the school directly. If your child is selected for the AAP program they’ll be pulled out with other students throughout the week for those subjects.

Dranesville is a Local Level IV program for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement for grades 3rd-6th. Level IV advanced placement is a full-time program. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending Clearview or remaining at Dranesville, their neighborhood school.

The biggest difference between the two programs is students enrolled. All students in full-time, center-based classes like Clearview have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools. In a Local Level IV classroom at Dranesville, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving students who are capable of working at an advanced level.

Dranesville is one of the few elementary schools in the area that offers FLES or Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools. The program helps students learn a world language, in this case Spanish, through Science and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) integrated content.

There are many activities for students before, during, and after school:

  • Student Council Association -students can participate through classroom representatives and student officers
  • Chorus, Band, and Strings – students in the upper grades may choose to participate in one of these electives in addition to general music
  • Weekly Television Show- Morning news program produced by and starring Dranesville students[/su_icon_text]

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: user-circle” icon_color=”#800020″ icon_size=”39″]Enrollment

There are close to 750 students enrolled at Dranesville Elementary each school year.

Students living in the Herndon subdivisions of Chadon, Dominion Ridge, Hunters Creek, Metro Square, Squareland Heights, The Downs, and Van Vlecks may attend Dranesville. Dranesville is in the Herndon Pyramid that means if your child goes to Dranesville they’ll go to Herndon Middle School then Herndon High School.

We always recommend you check out the Fairfax County Boundary Locator to confirm the schools serving a specific address before making any decision to buy or rent a home. [/su_icon_text]

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: bell-slash” icon_color=”#800020″ icon_size=”39″]School Hours

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Dranesville’s hours are Monday through Friday are 9:20 to 4:05 for grades K – 6th.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Dranesville offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: list” icon_color=”#800020″ icon_size=”39″]Parent Involvement

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

The Dranesville PTA supports a number of activities in the community including social events and fundraisers. Each school year the PTA offers a number of fee-based after-school enrichment programs. They vary year to year and range from science focused to athletics and the arts.

The school welcomes parents to set up a time with your child’s teacher to volunteer in the classroom, read a book to the class, or come in to have lunch with your child. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.[/su_icon_text]

[su_homepage_testimonial author="A Happy Client"]I’ve only shopped for property three times, but Abraham provided a substantially better experience than my previous two agents (even though they all worked for the same brokerage). He knows what he is doing, he is service oriented, he is friendly, and he gets things done. I can tell you that you probably have no idea how awesome a real estate agent can be unless you’ve bought or sold through Abraham. As long as he is around and I’m buying or selling, Abraham will be my agent from here on out.[/su_homepage_testimonial]
