Washington Mill offers a number of Advanced Academic Placement options for grades K-6. Levels I and II are open to all grade levels with Levels III and IV open to 3rd-6th graders. Level III is part-time (students are pulled out of class for instruction in certain subjects) and Level IV is a full-time program.

Washington Mill is a Local Level IV Center for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement.Washington Mill’s Local Level IV program provides an important option for advanced learners who need the challenge of a full-time AAP center curriculum and do not want to leave their neighborhood school. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending Riverside or remaining at Washington Mill.

Washington Mill Elementary School has a Two-Way Spanish Immersion Program for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Students spend half their day learning in English and half their day learning in Spanish. Students are selected via a lottery system so you can’t simply enroll your child when you register at the school.

Like most school’s in Fairfax County, Washington Mill has an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The Washington Mill ESOL program focuses on helping students achieve academic success.[/su_icon_text]

There are typically between 600-615 students enrolled at Washington Mill Elementary each school year.  In the 2016 school year the student-teacher ratio was 12.7 to 1.

Students living in the 22309 zip code, specifically in Mount Vernon Grove, Mount Vernon Forest, Mount Vernon Park,  Ferry Landing, and Woodlawn Manor will Washington Mill Elementary. Washington Mill is in the Mount Vernon Pyramid that means if your child goes to Mount Vernon Woods they’ll go to Whitman Middle School then Mount Vernon High School.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Washington Mill’s hours are Monday through Friday are 8:35 to 3:20.

Washington Mill is one of the few schools in the area that offers full-time preschool. There are a few other schools in the area with part-time programs but Washington Mill’s preschoolers are on a nearly identical schedule as the other grade school students.

Preschool hours are Monday from 8:35 to noon and Tuesday through Friday from 8:35 to 3:20. 

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Washington Mill offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Washington Mill PTA supports the school through various fundraiser during the school year. Funds from PTA fundraisers go towards everything from after-school enrichment programs to social events.

The PTA sponsored after-school programs include:

• Running Club
•  Lego Club
• Science Club
• Garden Club

The Washington Mill PTA website has a calendar of both school and PTA sponsored events. You can also sign up on the website to volunteer at upcoming events.

There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school by volunteering in the lunchroom, office, and classrooms. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.[/su_icon_text]
