4 Things About Riverside Elementary

Riverside is a center for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement. It offers full-time advanced placement focusing on four core content areas. The program is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Over the last 15 years, enrollment in these AAP programs have more than triple which is caused a swell in both the number of schools turned into centers and the number of schools that offer Level IV programs.

Eligible students with Level IV academic placement whose base school doesn’t offer Level IV classes may attend Riverside.

Their are opportunities for students to develop leadership skills through participation in the Student Council Association, After-school Student Leadership Academy (SLA), Men’s and Women’s Leadership Lunches, Safety Patrols, and the Peer Mediation program.

Like most school’s in Fairfax County, Riverside has an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Riverside has four teachers on staff that focus on helping those students achieve academic success.

Students in grades 4-6 also have opportunities to participate in chorus, band, and strings classes and to work on the WRES morning news team.[/su_icon_text]

The school’s public grades span pre-kindergarten – 6th with just over 800 students and 13.8 Student/Teacher Ratio.

Most elementary schools in Fairfax County feed into one middle school and then students move on to the high school at the top of that pyramid. That isn’t the case here with Riverside. Students attending Riverside Elementary School will move through the pyramid system to  Whitman Middle School or Sandburg Middle School which feed into Mount Vernon High School and West Potomac High School, respectively.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Riverside’s hours are Monday through Friday are 9:05 to 3:50 for students in kindergarten through 6th grade. Riverside also has a part-time preschool with two enrollment options. Morning PreK starts at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 12:35 p.m. and afternoon PreK between 12:40 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Riverside offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Riverside PTA  supports the school through various fundraiser during the school year. Check out their website for a list of upcoming events and meetings.

There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school by volunteering in the lunchroom, office, and classrooms. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.[/su_icon_text]
