5 Things About Mount Vernon High

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: book” icon_color=”#800020″ icon_size=”39″]School Programs

Mount Vernon offers a variety of programs for academic advancements, career prep, and extracurricular interest. Mount Vernon is one of eight schools in Fairfax County that offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. This program encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Students in the program must do a personal project, complete certain classes and pass required exams.

Mount Vernon has a Marine Corp JROTC program that has been around for over 20 years.  JROTC is a leadership education program designed to teach leadership skills, character development, self-discipline, and citizenship. There’s a JROTC drill team, rifle team, and cyber team.

There are numerous programs and activities available for students no matter their interest, newspaper and yearbook committee, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Model UN, National Science Bowl, Improv, Robotics Club, Scholastic Bowl, and a few honor societies.  [/su_icon_text]

All Fairfax County middle and high schools offer both French and Spanish, however, Mount Vernon also offers German language classes.[/su_icon_text]

Like most other high schools in the area, Mount Vernon has facilities on campus to host most athletic competitions. There’s a gymnasium, football field, soccer field, and baseball field.

Mount Vernon has a team for every athlete in every season.

There’s cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball in the fall. As winter approaches and temperatures drop they move on to indoor sports like basketball, dance team, gymnastics, indoor track, swim & dive, and wrestling.  By the time spring rolls around students are back outside trying out for baseball, crew, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field. Student enrollment at Mount Vernon High is about 2,000 students per school year with a student-teacher ratio of 12.6 to 1.

Students attending Mount Vernon High School usually attend Walt Whitman Middle for the 7th and 8th grades. Students living in Mount Vernon, Riverside Estates, Woodlawn Manor, Sequoyah, and the surrounding areas of the 22309 zip code are typically assigned to Mount Vernon High.  I always recommended future home buyers use Fairfax County Boundary Locator to confirm the schools serving a specific address before making any decisions.[/su_icon_text]

If you’re relocating from another part of the country you may be surprised to learn that schools in Fairfax County begin the last week of August and end in either the second or third week of June.

Mount Vernon High operates on a block schedule where students alternate classes depending on the day of the week. In-class time is roughly one and a half hours rather than attending every class each day for 45 minutes. Here’s an example of what your high schooler can expect on a day to day basis. [su_homepage_testimonial author="A Happy Client"]I’ve only shopped for property three times, but Abraham provided a substantially better experience than my previous two agents (even though they all worked for the same brokerage). He knows what he is doing, he is service oriented, he is friendly, and he gets things done. I can tell you that you probably have no idea how awesome a real estate agent can be unless you’ve bought or sold through Abraham. As long as he is around and I’m buying or selling, Abraham will be my agent from here on out.[/su_homepage_testimonial]
