5 Things About Hayfield Secondary High

Hayfield High has one of the largest student bodies among Fairfax County High Schools. Total student enrollment is just under 3,000, however, that number is slightly skewed because Hayfield Secondary includes both Hayfield Middle and High.

Student enrollment at Hayfield High is actually between 2,000-2,100 students per school year with a student-teacher ratio of 15.4 to 1, which is equal to the Virginia state level.

Students attending Hayfield High School usually attend Hayfield Secondary Middle for the 7th and 8th grades. Students living in Kingstowne, Hayfield Farms, Hayfield View, Lake D’evereux, Wickford, and some parts of Lorton will be assigned to Hayfield Secondary if they attend the following elementary schools,  in the Hayfield Pyramid Hayfield, Island Creek, Lane, Gunston, and Lorton Station. If you’re relocating from another part of the country you may be surprised to learn that schools in Fairfax County begin the last week of August and end in either the second or third week of June.

Hayfield High operates on a block schedule where students alternate classes depending on the day of the week. In-class time is roughly one and a half hours rather than attending every class each day for 45 minutes. Here’s an example of what your high schooler can expect on a day to day basis. Hayfield offers a variety of programs for academic advancements, career prep, and extracurricular interest. Honor students join the National Honor Society and Science Honor Society as well as enroll in Hayfield’s Advanced Placement (AP) classes.  The Pathway to the Baccalaureate program partnered with NOVA community college and George Mason University provides structured support to students as they transition from high school to college.

Hayfield’s Army JROTC has a Drill team, Raider team, Air Rifle team, and host a JROTC Academic and Leadership Bowl.

There are also programs available for those students that may have interest outside of higher education. Hayfield participates in the National Automotive Technicians Educational Foundation, Cosmetology, and CAD 2005 Certifications.[/su_icon_text]

All Fairfax County middle and high schools offer both French and Spanish, however, Hayfield also offers classes in Arabic, Japanese, and Latin. Like most other high schools in the area, Hayfield has facilities on campus to host most athletic competitions. There’s a gymnasium, football field, soccer field, and baseball field.

Hayfield has a team for every athlete in every season.

There’s cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball in the fall. As winter approaches and temperatures drop they move on to indoor sports like basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim & dive, and wrestling.  By the time spring rolls around students are back outside trying out for baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field.
