When looking for an elementary school parents usually want to know about the size of the school, the student to teacher ratio, the school’s ratings, and available options for before and after care. Sangster has been awarded the State of Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award a number of times over the years. The school’s standardized test scores are some of the best in the state.

STEAM education in FCPS is an inquiry approach to teaching and learning where students integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to solve problems. Students in 4th-6th grade visit the STEAM classroom for at least one hour each week. Students on K-3 are exposed to STEAM lessons on a monthly basis.

Sangster has a Foreign Language in an Elementary School (FLES) program making it one of only a small percentage of Fairfax County elementary schools that offers foreign language. Students in Kindergarten through 6th-grade work on developing basic communicative skills in Spanish while reinforcing content from other subjects.

Sangster has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly. If your child is selected for the AAP program they’ll be pulled from class with other students throughout the week for those subjects.

Sangster is also a Fairfax County Advanced Placement Level IV center for 3rd through 6th grade. That means all students in full-time Level IV, center-based classes have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee. If students attending neighboring schools do not have a level four program at their school they have the option of attending Sangster.

There are many activities for students before, during, and after school:

• Band, Strings, Chorus, and Handbell Choir – students in the upper grades may elect to participate in one or more music program in addition to general music
• Safety Patrol – Patrols support the staff and crossing guard during arrival and dismissal.
• W.H.S.E. Morning News Show- student anchors run a morning news program each school day
• SCA (Student Council Association) – made up of officers and representatives from each classroom.  [/su_icon_text]

There are close to 1000 students enrolled at Sangster, making it one of the largest elementary schools in Fairfax County.

Students living in the Fairfax Station and Springfield subdivisions of Briarlynn Estates, Estates at Roseland, Lakewood Hills, Orange Hunt, and South Run,  may attend Sangster. Sangster is in the Lake Braddock Pyramid that means if your child goes to Sangster they’ll go to Lake Braddock Middle School then Lake Braddock High School.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Sangster’s hours are Monday through Friday are 9:10 to 3:55 for grades K – 6.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Sangster offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

The Sangster PTA supports a number of efforts to enrich the lives of the students, teachers, and families at the school. They sponsor a number of popular activities each year including social events and fundraisers.

Each school year the PTA offers a number of fee-based after-school enrichment programs. They vary year to year and range from science focused to athletics and the arts.

Parents are active participants in the daily school life of Sangster students. Volunteers are frequently seen in the building reading with students or supporting math instruction.
