Garfield has an Advanced Academic Program for students in grades K-6. The school works with teachers to identify students that may benefit from the program, however, you can also request a screening of your child by contact the school directly. If your child is selected for the AAP program they’ll be pulled out with other students throughout the week for those subjects.

Garfield is a Title I school, which means they receive additional funds through a federal grant to help level the playing field for students in families with lower income. Schools are identified for Title I funds based on the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Garfield is one of 65 Fairfax County Elementary schools with a STEAM lab. STEAM Lab focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, including robotics, engineering design challenges, computer science, exposure to current STEAM fields, and invention curriculum.

Garfield participates in a program called a Responsive Classroom. The program focuses on making sure that social and academic learning happen simultaneously.[/su_icon_text]

Garfield serves students in grades K-6. There are less than 400 students enrolled at Garfield Elementary each school year, making it one of the smallest elementary schools in Fairfax County.

Many students living in the 22150 zip code including those in Springvale, Westhaven, and Springfield Green may attend Garfield. Garfield is in the Lee Pyramid that means if your child goes to Forestdale they’ll go to Key Middle School then Lee High School.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Garfield’s hours are Monday through Friday are 9:20 to 4:05.

If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Garfield offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child.[/su_icon_text]

Garfield’s PTA supports a number of efforts to enrich the lives of the students, teachers, and families at the school. The PTA in partnership with Garfield Elementary School sponsors a number of popular activities each year including social events and fundraisers.

There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school by volunteering in the lunchroom, office, and classrooms. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.
