Gunston offers a number of Advanced Academic Placement options for grades K-6. Levels I and II are open to all grade levels with Levels III and IV open to 3rd-6th graders. Level III is part-time (students are pulled out of class for instruction in certain subjects) and Level IV is a full-time program.

Gunston is a Local Level IV Center for Fairfax County Advanced Academic Placement.Gunston’s Local Level IV program provides an important option for advanced learners who need the challenge of a full-time AAP center curriculum and do not want to leave their neighborhood school. Students that qualify for Level IV Services have the option of attending Lorton Station or remaining at Gunston.

The biggest difference between the two options would be class make-up. All students in full-time, center-based classes like Lorton Station have been identified as center-eligible by a central selection committee and will be coming from several neighborhood schools to comprise the center class. In a Local Level IV classroom at Halley ES, the students are a mix of students who are center-eligible and high achieving students who are capable of working at advanced levels, all enrolled in the local school.

Northern Virginia is a culturally diverse population and Halley offers an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program.

In addition to classroom instruction, students welcome opportunities to participate in activities such as the band, chorus, strings, safety patrols, and the Student Council Association.[/su_icon_text]

There are on average of about 815 students enrolled at Gunston Elementary each school year, with a student-teacher ratio of 14.23 to 1. The school’s public grades span kindergarten through 6th with 804 students and 14.23 Student/Teacher Ratio. Gender enrollment for the 2015 – 2016 school year for Gunston Elementary was 385 Males and 419 Females.

Students living in Fort Belvoir and Lorton subdivisions Indian Springs Farm, Mason Passage, Overlook Pointe, and Pohick Estates will probably attend Gunston Elementary. Most elementary schools in Fairfax County feed into one middle school and then students move on to the high school at the top of that pyramid. That isn’t the case here with Gunston. Students attending Gunston Elementary School will move through the pyramid system to either Hayfield Middle School or South County Middle School which feed into Hayfield High School and South County High School, respectively.

One important thing to consider is the school’s hours of operation. Gunston is open Monday through Friday are 8:35 to 3:20. If you need to be at work by 8:30 that could present some challenges for you, especially if you’re commuting to the District or the Pentagon.

Gunston offers SACC which is a before and after-school program has with the Office for Children of Fairfax County. However, I have to warn you that SACC often times has a waiting list that’s months long. Check out the SACC website to see if there are spots currently available.

If you are unable to get your child signed up for SACC there are a number of private before and after care programs in the area that will drop off and pick up your child. Island also has a program called FLEX which focuses on Foreign Langauge Experience. [/su_icon_text]

Parent involvement has been linked to student achievement. When looking for a school for your kids you’re also looking for a school that’s a good fit for you as well.

Gunston PTA’s is made up of parents, teachers, and staff. The Gunston PTA host numerous fundraisers throughout the year to support the school. They have everything from restaurant night at area restaurants to fun runs.

In addition to the PTA, parents can volunteer to be a room parent, help out in the office, library and lunchroom. There are lots of opportunities to support your child and the school. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you like.[/su_icon_text]
